Step 1: Source Liquid Culture
The fastest and most reliable way to start growing any mushroom is to source liquid Culture.
Step 2: Inoculate Grain Spawn
Measure the desired amount of grain, keeping in mind that the rye will expand when moistened and be almost double its original size. You want to have your jars 2/3’s-3/4’s full when fully sterilized so just use a quart jar and measure out 1 quart of dry grain for every 3 quarts of desired spawn. Throw in a little extra for good measure. Rinse the grain 4 or 5 times in cold water or until the water is pouring off reasonably clear. Let the grains soak for 12 -24 hours. This will allow the grains to absorb water, and will cause many contaminants to sprout, making them more susceptible to being killed through sterilization. After 24 hours of soaking, drain the grain and soak in boiled water for 20 minutes and then drain and lay out the grains to dry on a flat surface. Once the outside of the kernels are dry they are packed into jars or filter patch bags and sterilized and inoculated with liquid culture. once fully colonized, they grain spawn is added to substrate.
Step 2: Substrate
Mix 5 cups of hardwood sawdust pellets + 1 cup of wheat bran in a 5 gallon bucket. Add 5.5 cups of hot water and mix until the pellets have broken up into a loose sawdust texture. Pack into filter patch bags and sterilize for 2.5 hours at 15 psi.
Step 3: Inoculating Substrate Block
Open the sterilized substrate bag. Use 2 to 10 % (of target substrate mass) of grain spawn for inoculation of wood substrate. Seal the bag and mix well by shaking it around. Try to get an even distribution of spawn. Set the bags on a shelf at room temperature for a number of days or weeks until the substrate is completely colonized. Check the whole block over to ensure that there is no left over substrate that hasn’t yet colonized before opening the bag.
Final Step: Fruiting
You can use humidifier or misting fogger inside of a grow tent. It can be programmed according to the intensity and frequency of spraying to maintain a constant humidity in the range of 95-100% to initiate fruiting. It is necessary to ventilate the grow tent 3-5 times a day. It is enough just to open the grow tent for 3-5 minutes.
Although light is not necessary for the induction of fruiting in fungi, some spectra have been found to be stimulating for the initiation of pins and are essential for the normal development of the fruiting body. The optimal lighting cycle for mushrooms is 12 on/off cycle.
